This is an excellent study from the New England Journal of Medicine showing that careful management of a mood stabilizer might eradicate the need for an anti-depressant in a bipolar patient. Not sure what "careful management of a mood stabilizer" means. All doctors monitor their patients' mood stabilizers. I don't know what these doctors did differently than most.
This is a really important question and a really important study. For years people thought that giving an antidepressant to someone with bipolar disorder could induce a manic phase. This is a must read.
